Tuition Fees

From the summer semester 2007 onwards, a 500 € tuition fee will apply each semester at all public institutions of higher education in Baden-Württemberg. Additionally, 40 € will have to be paid for administration plus about 40 € to 70 € are due for student social services each academic term.

Tuition fees apply for both, German and international students, however, there are generally no fees for exchange programmes. Also exempt are disabled persons, doctorate students or exceptionally gifted students. If there are special agreements between universities, states or countries, foreign students can be exempted when the agreement includes an accordant clause.

If you apply through uni-assist, you also have to consider their handling fee. Some universities or universities of applied science may also charge application fees. As there is no general regulation about this matter, you should check with your chosen institution of higher education.

The state of Baden-Württemberg and the L-Bank Baden-Württemberg offer loans with low interest rates for every student, regardless of your parents’ income. Application forms for this are included in the matriculation documents. The loan only needs to be repaid after two years and only if the net income is the equivalent or more of 1060 € per month. If children and / or a partner without income have to be taken into consideration, the required income changes accordingly.

This rule, however, applies only to citizens of the European Union (EU) or the European Economic Area (EEA), relatives of citizens of the EU or of the EEA, foreigners with a permanent residence permit and foreigners or stateless persons who obtained their school leaving certificate in Germany.

If you have already taken up a course of studies at a German university, you may finish your degree within the standard period of studies plus four more semesters, if needed, without paying tuition fees.
