Research Universities

These universities combine research with teaching and learning. Independent, applied and pure research is conducted here. The focus is on academic work – meaning that the length of studies complies with international university courses all over the world. They prepare students for professional lives in which they will have to apply the scientific knowledge and methods they have acquired. By fostering new generations of scientists through technology transfer, continuing education, and a close dialogue with industry, research universities ensure Baden-Württemberg´s status as a centre of scientific excellence.

Our universities offer the following fields of study:

  • medicine
  • natural sciences
  • engineering
  • economics
  • humanities and cultural studies
  • law
  • social sciences
  • agriculture and forestry

Degrees awarded by research universities:

Although studies at a university are based on fairly strict regulations, they nevertheless offer flexibility: the broad range of subjects allows interdisciplinary study or specialization and there are opportunities for students to pursue individual and independent research.
