Your guide to institutions of higher education in Baden-Württemberg

Baden-Württemberg´s university landscape is the most diverse in the entire Federal Republic of Germany. Students have the choice of institutions which are either theoretically or practically oriented.

The different types of institutions are as follows:

Nine research universities, characterised by the methodological and theoretical approach embodied in Humboldt´s principle of "inseparability of research and teaching" (Wilhelm von Humboldt, 1767-1835 reformer of higher education)
39 universities of applied sciences (Fachhochschulen), 22 public, ten private and seven specialising exclusively in public-sector administration). They offer combined academic and practical training as well as applied research
Five music academies that emphasise the development of theoretical and performance skills
Two art academies and one design academy
One film academy
Germany´s first pop academy
Eight universities of co-operative education (Berufsakademien). These programmes last three years and combine an academic curriculum with practical training in a company or social welfare agency
Six universities of education (teacher training colleges) which offer theoretical and practical teacher training
Private universities

All of these institutions are open to students of all nationalities. They prepare students for a wide variety of professional activities by offering modern study methods that culminate in various types of degrees in subjects ranging from archaeology to zoology.

Our universities currently offer some 150 International Degree programmes which are taught either partly or entirely in English.
