Universities of Cooperative EducationThe universities of co-operative education called Berufsakademien (BA) combine academic studies with practical training in companies and corporations. Bosch, Daimler and Alcatel Lucent pioneered this form of higher education in the early 1970s. Today these universities educate about 20,000 students in co-operation with more than 4,100 companies. At universities of co-operative education two partners – companies and state universities – help students qualify for their professional careers. Companies provide students´ practical training and state universities provide the theoretical knowledge required. Degrees awarded are the same as those awarded at the universities of applied sciences. Curricula are clearly structured and compact. After only three years students are eminently employable in their fields of specialisation, with nearly all of them employed before their final examinations.
