Universities of Applied Sciences

Universities of Applied Sciences represent a relatively recent but highly successful development in higher education. The focus is on a more practical method of education with individualised teaching in small groups. An advantage of the system is that courses have examinations throughout which count towards the final degree.

Research is also conducted at these institutions although it is more directed towards practical requirements. Conventionally "theoretical" courses tend not to be found here as the subjects offered are geared towards the needs of the professional, for example, engineering, business administration, design and in the social services. The rising popularity in these institutions reflected in the fact that today more than 60% of all engineers and about 50% of all business administration graduates come from universities of applied sciences. Another vital feature of the Fachhochschule is its connections to regional industry and public administration.

Universities of Applied Sciences offer the following fields of study:

  • technology
  • engineering
  • business administration
  • computer science and IT
  • design
  • social sciences

Degrees awarded by these universities:

The Universities of Applied Sciences place emphasis on offering various services to the respective region - the students are familiar with the requirements of the working world, which forms an integral part of their studies.

Students wishing to complete a bachelor´s degree must plan between six and eight semesters, while a master´s degree requires between two to four semesters.
