Entrance Qualifications for Universities of Applied Sciences in Baden-Württemberg

The main attractions of the universities of applied sciences of education for foreign students include strong practical orientation, continual incorporation of the latest developments in the fields of applied research and practice into instruction, high standards of education, and brief, intensive courses
of study.

A basic prerequisite for anyone wishing to study an international degree course is proof of English language proficiency. This varies from TOEFL to the Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency but depends on the institution.

In general, any foreigner who is qualified to study in their home country is entitled to study at a University of Applied Sciences (FH). In contrast to the application procedure for studying at a university in Baden-Württemberg (where you have to send your application to the relevant International Office), study applications at Universities of Applied Sciences in Baden-Württemberg are all to be directed to one central address:

Ausländerstudienkolleg ASK
(Institute for International Students)
Fachhochschule Konstanz
Brauneggerstr. 55
78462 Konstanz
Germany

Sometimes this only applies to courses taught in German. As a first step, contact the International Office at the University of Applied Sciences of your choice (E-Mail address in section on International Offices) and ask them where you should apply for which course. Some Universities of Applied Sciences, however want the application to be processed by the University of Applied Sciences in Konstanz. The procedure for this is as follows:

  • The ASK examines the certificates of all foreigners applying for admission to a FH degree course of studies to insure they conform to federal guidelines. Moreover, the ASK administers the following examinations required for admission to a FH in Baden-Württemberg: 1. Feststellungsprüfung (Assessment Examination in four subjects) 2. The DSH German-language examination (formerly PNDS).
  • Depending on the home country and the educational background of the foreign student, they may be required to pass the Feststellungsprüfung or simply the DSH German-language examination.
  • Applications for student visas together with proof of financial support can be submitted to the consular sections of the German embassy in one's home country once certification regarding admission to a FH has been received from the ASK. See section on Visas.
  • Once foreign students have had their foreign credentials examined by the ASK and have successfully passed the DSH German-language examination and (if need be) the Feststellungsprüfung, they will receive a certificate from the AS with which they can apply for admission to any FH of their choice in Baden-Württemberg. In Baden-Württemberg 5% of all places at universities are reserved for foreign students who are not EU citizens.

  • Please submit only fully completed applications!
  • All copies have to be authenticated!
Application forms that are not fully completed or not authenticated will be rejected.
  • No documents will be sent back!

After passing the admission test to the ASK, please submit the following documents (all of which must be no older than three months) during registration (Immatrikulation): i. Certificate of Health (Gesundheitsbescheinigung) from the public health authorities (Gesundheitsamt) or a doctor k. Declaration of Financial Standing (Finanzierungserklärung)
