Studying in the German Language

Institutions of higher education in Baden-Württemberg are increasingly offering a wide range of international study programmes in English (see current list of Course Programmes). However they offer the majority of their courses - from their wide array of different faculties - in the German language. If you wish to view their full offer of German courses, please visit the website of the individual institutes of higher education or take a look at the Course Book for German courses (this link is in German only). If you would like to study a course in the German language, you will need a German language qualification.

As a general rule, you will have to take the German language proficiency test  DSH (Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang ausländischer Studienbewerber) or TestDaF (Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache für ausländische Studienbewerber)

In some cases, you are exempted from the DSH or TestDaF, for example:

for a single semester period of study in Germany

if you hold the Language Certificate of the Standing Conference of German Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs (Kultusministerkonferenz) – Level II

  • hold the Kleines Deutsches Sprachdiplom issued by the Goethe-Institute
  • hold the Zentrale Oberstufenprüfung likewise issued by the Goethe-Institute
  • if you hold a university entrance qualification issued by a German school abroad, mainly with lessons taught in the German language.
If you decide to do a German course and obtain a German language qualification before coming to Germany, you can do so at the Goethe-Institute or similar institution.
To find a Goethe-Institute in your home country, go onto the website www.goethe.de This provides with a list of the 125 Goethe-Institutes in 76 countries.

In Baden-Württemberg:

The Goethe-Institutes in the region are located in Freiburg and Mannheim. They also teach the DSH course (Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang ausländischer Studienbewerber: German language university entrance examination for foreign students), should this be required.

If you do not qualify for entry:

There are still possibilities open to you, if your qualifications are not accepted.

You can be admitted to the ASK Study Center (Institute for International Students) where you can study a range of subjects to prepare you for your chosen study programme. German language is one of these subjects. Following a couple of semesters, you can then take the examinations (Feststellungsprüfung) and if you pass, you will gain admission to your study programme.
