The School System in Baden-Württemberg

How does the school system work in the Land of Baden-Württemberg? Is it all so different from your home country? Here is a short overview of the education system in the land of Baden-Württemberg.

The majority of children and young people in Baden-Württemberg go to state schools, which are subsidised by the state goverment and are therefore free-of-charge.

Normally children in Baden-Württemberg begin school at the age of six years. The first school they go to is the Grundschule (primary school).

At the end of the 4th grade, children leave the (common) primary school and continue their education in an establishment building on their education at primary level. There are three types of schools which a child can attend on the recomendation of the primary school:

The Hauptschule (secondary school) provides school-children with a general education geared towards practice-oriented learning material with clearly defined tasks. Children stay at this Hauptschule for the next five years till they take their final examinations. Once they have passed their examination they obtain their school-leaving certificate ”Hauptschulabschluss” in the 9th grade. With this certificate the school-leaver is entitled to begin a traineeship in a specific profession or can make the transition to a vocational school.

The Realschule (also a type of secondary school) provides an extended general education as the basis for a professional training course or other types of courses. Children attend the school for five years until they take their examination in the 10th grade. Once they have passed their school-leaving certificate they obtain the “Realschulabschluss“. This certificate gives school-leavers the following options: they can either begin a training course in a state-recognised profession, they can commence on a one- or multi-year course at a vocational school or at a vocational grammar school.

The Gymnasium (Grammar School) lasts a total of nine years although in some school children can attain their school leaving certificate after eight years. The Grammar School provides students with a broader and deeper general education than is to be found at the above-mentioned secondary schools. This type of education equips children with the ability and prerequisites to continue to higher education. After completing the 13th grade the students take the Abitur (matriculation; British equivalent: A-level) and having passed this, are entitled to study at an institute of higher education according to the grade they have achieved.
