Accommodation

How easy or hard it is to find accommodation depends on the location of the institution of higher education you have chosen. Basically there are three alternatives:

  • Renting your own apartment
  • Renting a room in the halls of residence
  • Renting a room in an apartment shared with other students – with one student signing the tenancy lease.
Plan enough time to find somewhere to live – a suitable environment where you feel comfortable but do not have to spend a large percentage of your monthly budget is a prerequisite to enjoying your studies!

Halls of residence (Studentenwohnheime)

The rooms are normally fairly small but they really are the cheapest type of accommodation available. Having said this there are sometimes actually quite luxurious rooms in some halls of residence as well as accommodation for couples with children.

In general this type of accommodation is ideal if you are new to a town as the majority of students live here and is a great way to meet people. However, remember: Where there are many people, there is also much noise. It is not the quietest alternative! The quickest and most direct route to obtain information is the student service at your chosen institution (see list of student services).

Unfortunately the demand is higher than the supply and this is where you will face the first challenge of studying abroad: you will be called upon to use your own initiative and sense of detection. And don’t worry if you can’t get a room there are still other alternatives available!

Shared apartments (Wohngemeinschaften “WG“)

This is another way of living relatively cheaply. As it is not that easy to find accommodation, we have compiled a list of useful search engines (see quicklinks) which are invaluable in your search.

Tenancy laws

Many of you will be looking for an apartment or room for the first time so we do not want to go into the ocean of tenancy laws here. Vital to know is that should you need any advice or have any problems, you are entitled to use the legal advisory service at the student services organisations: www.studentenwerke.de.
