Universities in south west Germany top the league
Universities in south west Germany have again performed outstandingly in this year’s CHE, the most comprehensive ranking of German-speaking institutions of higher education. The ranking undertaken by the Centre for Higher Education Development (CHE) evaluates one third of all subjects every year. The focus this year was on humanities and engineering sciences, as well as psychology and educational science. The University of Freiburg, the Karlsruhe Institute for Technology (KIT) and the University of Konstanz as well as the Universities of Applied Sciences in Biberach, Ulm and Karlsruhe all came in top positions along a number of indicators.
The University of Freiburg has found its way into the leading group of universities for degree courses in German, history and psychology. The English studies degree was particularly successful coming out right at the top along five indicators (“study conditions”, “support”, “library equipment”, “research funds” and “international orientation”). Three other universities (Heidelberg, Konstanz and Tübingen) also scored top points for “history”.
The KIT and the Biberach and Karlsruhe Universities of Applied Sciences all shone in the engineering science fields of civil engineering and architecture. The Universities of Applied Sciences in Esslingen and Ulm scored outstanding marks in mechanical engineering as well as in electrical and information technology.
The Minister of Science, Research and the Arts for Baden-Württemberg, Prof. Peter Frankenberg, regards the new CHE ranking as confirmation of the excellent quality of teaching and research at institutions of higher education in south west Germany. The ranking results can be found in the new study guide published by the weekly newspaper “Die Zeit”. The study surveyed a total of 200,000 students and 15,000 professors at around 300 universities in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the Netherlands.
