New doctorate programme in neuroinformatics
The Universities of Freiburg, Stockholm, Edinburgh and Bangalore have launched a new cooperative doctorate programme which is supported by the European Union’s “Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctorate Programme”. The programme goes under the name of EuroSPIN (European Study Programm in Neuroinformatics) and is due to begin next year.
EuroSPIN doctoral candidates will all run interdisciplinary research projects which will lead to a joint or dual academic degree awarded by two of the participating universities, according to the Bernstein Center for Computational Neuroscience at the University of Freiburg. The four institutions taking part in the project in Germany, Sweden, Scotland and India are all pioneers in the field of neuroinformatics. Freiburg has made a major contribution to the programme in the areas of computational neuroscience and neurotechnology. The science of neuroinformatics aims to identify the computational problem-solving tasks which the human brain undertakes and to understand the computational strategies and procedures it uses in the process. The aim is to apply the principles and newly developed methods discovered by researchers to as yet unsolved problems in practical biomedicine.
The mission of EuroSPIN is to provide young researchers working at the interface of neurosciences and computer science the chance to engage in pioneering research and to offer them optimum training opportunities.
