The German national railway company Deutsche Bahn AG and the University of Stuttgart intend to engage in intensive collaborative research in the future. The objective of the new cooperative venture will be to enhance safety standards and technology. Rolling stock, business organisation and infrastructure all require continuing improvement, according to a statement on the planned conclusion of a new cooperation agreement between the rail firm and the university. “Rail transport will play a key role in the future of green transport,” according to Professor Ullrich Martin, Director of the University of Stuttgart’s Institute of Railway and Transportation Engineering (IEV). Customer proximity, business efficiency and environmental sustainability have long been at the heart of the research undertaken at the Institute. The Institute itself also has a special railway technology teaching and research unit which works on the full range of basic transport technology research and issues revolving around power engineering for rail vehicles.

Deutsche Bahn hopes that the planned collaboration will enable it to establish direct contact with students and young, up and coming researchers. Under the new contract students will be able to undertake placements and complete student research projects and degree theses in various Deutsche Bahn AG divisions. In return, Deutsche Bahn employees will be integrated in guest lectures held as part of the University of Stuttgart's teaching programme. According to the University, the new cooperation agreement will be signed on 7 September in Stuttgart.

The University of Stuttgart’s IEV is a member of the UITP (International Association of Public Transport) Academic Network which regards itself as a global advocate and promoter of public transport and sustainable mobility.
