“I met the study co-ordinator in a hotel in Cairo where some German universities were presenting their international courses during a conference,” Moustafa El-bahaey recalls. “It was pure coincidence that I came to Ulm. But I’m glad I did.” As micro electronics is a booming industry in Egypt, the young computer engineer decided to take the chance and do his Master´s in Ulm. “It was the perfect programme for my goals.”

Now, after almost two years in Baden-Württemberg, he feels very much at home in Ulm. The systematic and organized course meets his interests and he is hard at work on his thesis. Communications technology is a very work-intensive course: “We often work more than 10 hours a day,” Moustafa says, “it´s a very good preparation for the future.” Communications technology is a two-year Master of Science Programme which teaches a research-oriented curriculum with up-to-date content from telecommunications, optoelectronics, microelectronics and microwave engineering and prepares international students for exciting careers in today's global information society.

It took Moustafa just a few weeks to adjust to the new academic and social environment. He especially enjoys the small and rather quiet city of Ulm which is of course very different from Cairo where he studied before. “It is quite easy to find one’s way around the city,” the Master´s student says, “although we normally have very little time to look around during the week.”

Moustafa lives with four other young men in a typical German “Wohngemeinschaft” (shared apartment) where young people live together and organize the housekeeping on their own. Alternatively, international students can always live in student housing, either alone or in shared accommodation.

Would he send his children to Ulm? “Of course, it is very good to gain international experience,” he believes. “Although we all come from different cultural and academic backgrounds, an international course harmonizes our knowledge and will prepare all of us for the global scientific and business world.”
