The Offenburg University of Applied Sciences is offering attractive summer courses for students of “German as a foreign language”. The crash courses provide six hours of teaching per day to classes of between 12 and 14 and introduce students to Germany’s language and culture. Three levels - elementary, intermediate and advanced - are offered. Students can take advantage of intensive one-to-one support provided by experienced language teachers. The idea behind the courses is to help students get to grips better with everyday life in Germany – even if they are really intending to concentrate on English-language courses in Germany. The qualification awarded at the end of the course is recognised in the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS).

The summer classes will cater for between 60 and 80 students and will be run from September 1 to 25 2009. Course fees are 480 euros, or 200 euros for Erasmus students. Accommodation in halls of residence or in private rooms is likely to cost in the region between 180 and 250 euros. Applications must be received by July 15 2009.

The language courses in Offenburg are intended as a springboard for university study in Germany. Some of the course participants will stay on in Offenburg after the course to study for one of the four English-language master’s degrees which the medium-sized university offers its 2,500 students.

Offenburg itself is located in the Rhine valley between Strasbourg and the Black Forest in the historical territory known as the Ortenau, which is also one of the sunniest corners in the whole of Germany. The area is also ideally situated for brief outings to nearby France or Switzerland. The supporting programme for the summer courses includes excursions to Maulbronn Abbey, - a UNESCO World Heritage Site – to the Chateau of Bruchsal and a hike through the local vineyards and wine tasting in a local wine cellar.
