"Objects on the Move" - Problems inherent in global exchange

The transcultural problems which go hand in hand with the growing exchange of objects of all kinds are the focus of a summer school at the Universität Heidelberg. How does an artefact find its way into a museum? How does the meaning of a valuable gift change when it moves from one culture to another? Or what is the change in the function of flowers such as tulips, for example, during their migration as traded goods or over the course of history? - These are the sort of questions which international researchers will be addressing from July 13 to 16 2009 in Heidelberg under the general title of "Objects on the Move - Circulation, Social Practice and Transcultural Intersections". The Summer Congress at the Karl Jaspers Zentrum für transkulturelle Forschung is intended for advanced and doctoral humanities and liberal arts students. Applications must be made by May 10 2009. The Congress language will be English.

"For many people in India an image of an Indian deity is not an art work at all but a religious object, a god," explains Monica Juneja, Professor for Global Art History at the *Asia and Europe* Cluster which has developed the concept for this year’s summer school. Objects are embedded in many ways in their social contexts and transport a wealth of different meanings and associations. They often prove to be arenas which clearly exemplify both conflicts and productive dissonances.
The keynote lecture will be given by Richard H. Davis, Professor of Religion at Bard College in New York.
