Which flats are suitable to accommodate students and then families and pensioners at a later date? This was the challenge of the competition held by the Ministry of Economic Affairs Baden-Württemberg and the Baden-Württemberg Bausparkasse (building societies): providing accommodation that can cover the various living demands of various age groups. The competition was held as an initiative to think about the challenge of accommodation facilities in a time of demographic change. In the next few years, the student population is due to increase in the German Southwest and quarters are needed for them that can be used for other parts of the population at some point.
From the numerous architecture faculties that took part in the competition, the students Bianca Dohm and Bianca Wiesenfarth from the Hochschule Biberach won the contest with their concept.
The work of the two prospective architects was done in the Master’s degree course in Architecture at the Hochschule Biberach. The complexity of the task was particularly suitable for students at the university due to the way the course is taught there. The Master’s degree has a deep scientific foundation and students are intensively taught in small groups by several lecturers. Various subjects are dealt with in a detailed way over the period of the degree course. This expertise is then coupled with that of external specialists in order to cover all aspects of the work.
The jury was particularly impressed with the building structure which allows for a sensitive introduction of a new building into the current urban landscape.
