Students of
Hochschule Karlsruhe – Technik und Wirtschaft placed well in this year’s Formula Student Germany at Hockenheimring. Team Karlsruhe came in 19th overall out of a total of 78 registered teams, thus achieving the best placing for a Baden-Württemberg University of Applied Sciences. Not only the technology, but also the clean lines of the racing car of the team’s own design impressed the judges – the F102 took fifth place in the Style Award.
The international Formula Student competition was established in 1981 by the US Society of Automotive Engineering. 25 years later, the first such race was staged at Hockenheim as the Formula Student Germany. The objective of the event is to give young engineers an opportunity to gain practical experience under realistic conditions. Participants must develop a prototype racing car suitable for a small-scale production run. The speed of the car is not the sole criterion for victory, but rather the most convincing overall concept, with acceleration and braking, design, handling, weight and cost playing a role, too.
Team Karlsruhe will not be taking a summer break despite its respectable showing, as it is already preparing for next month’s race at the Ferrari test track in Modena, Italy. The team intends to continue optimizing its car to take it even closer to the pole position.
