Ulm University and the German University in Cairo (GUC) marked the fifth anniversary of the private university in Egypt with a celebration in Ulm on the 4th of July. With 6,500 students, a few thousand more soon to come, and an average of six applicants for every opening, the GUC has every reason to look back with pride on its accomplishments after five years.

Egypt’s ambassador to Germany Mohamed Al-Orabi and GUC founder Professor Ashraf Mansour took the opportunity to thank their German partners for their extensive support before, during and after the foundation of the new educational institution on the Nile. Special accolades went to the the state of Baden-Württemberg and the partner universities in Stuttgart and Ulm and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), all of which played big parts in the successful development of the GUC.

A 40,000 square meter industrial park is currently taking shape on the campus of the GUC. A number of big names in German business is involved in the development of the park and closely cooperate with the university. In doing so, they are also fulfilling goals with regard to economic and scientific partnership between Germany and Egypt. Their relationship is set to expand by further establishing the GUC as an internationally-oriented research university. Over 3,500 students are currently learning German in Cairo and around 1,000 are presently studying in Germany.

The GUC offers students from Egypt and other Arab countries educational opportunities in the fields of media and information technology, material science, pharmaceutics, biotechnology and management. The language of instruction is English. German is also on the curriculum in preparation for exchanges or advanced studies in Germany.
