Young researchers from around the world in Baden-Württemberg
For over 50 years, the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting has been providing young scientists unique access to Nobel laureates in physics, chemistry and physiology/medicine; economic sciences were added in 2004. Following the meeting, 20 selected participants from 17 countries were able to enjoy a very special highlight this year: Baden-Württemberg International offered them an exclusive four-day post-meeting programme of visits to selected research facilities and enterprises in south-western Germany from the 5th to the 9th of July. The participants were undergraduates, postgrads and PhD candidates, as well as young postdocs belonging to the international elite in the field of physics.

The cities of Ulm, Stuttgart and Karlsruhe were the reference points that the participants explored on their tour around Baden-Württemberg. In addition to visiting the physics faculties of the universities in Ulm, Stuttgart and Karlsruhe, the tour also dropped in on the Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe research centre and the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research in Stuttgart, rounding out the scientific part of the programme. Visits to Astrium GmbH in Friedrichshafen, the Stuttgart-Ulm railway project, the Mercedes-Benz Museum and Daimler AG in Stuttgart were also on the agenda. Rounding things out, a visit to a winegrowers’ co-operative provided a suitable regional culinary highlight.

The annual Nobel Laureate Meetings are organized by the Lindau-based Council for the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings and its President, Countess Sonja Bernadotte. The events are supported by the Foundation for Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings at Lake Constance. The members of the Founder’s Assembly of the Foundation include 182 Nobel laureates. The 58th meeting, which was held from the 29th of June to the 4th of July 2008, focused on physics. The event revolved around panel discussions and workshops in small groups in which the invited young researchers had the rare opportunity for personal encounters and discussions with their scientific and spiritual role models. The traditional gathering thus vigorously promotes dialogue between the scientific elites of today and tomorrow – motivation, inspiration and the transfer of knowledge characterize the unique meetings.
