Tübingen promotes Taiwan research
The European Research Center on Contemporary Taiwan (ERCCT) was opened on the 1st of June 2008 as a joint institution of Universität Tübingen and the Taiwanese Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation. Its goal is to promote the study of Taiwan in the social sciences in Europe and prompt research partnerships between Europe and Taiwan.
With this institution, Universität Tübingen is underscoring its international reputation as a pioneer in East Asia studies. The ERCCT maintains relationships to several renowned social science institutions in Taiwan. Only recently, it concluded a partnership agreement with the National Taiwan University.
The ERCCT is a venue in which PhD students and postdocs meet to discuss projects and prepare for their research phases in Taiwan. The young scientists from Europe and Taiwan study the fields of politics, law, business and society, as well as the interaction and integration between Taiwan and China. Taiwanese guest researchers contribute to the projects. The young researchers also receive support from the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation and the Taiwanese Ministry of Education grants the institution in Tübingen three generous fellowships a year.
By establishing the ERCCT, Universität Tübingen became one of the few universities in Europe to have parallel focal points on Taiwan and China in its educational and research work: it maintains its European Center for Chinese Studies (ECCS) in partnership with Beijing University.
