The Team with their racing car called Schluckspecht took first place on the Cours d’Armagnac race course in Nogaro, France, in the Fuel Cell category with a fuel consumption of 3,198 km/l. Overcast skies, showers and sunshine alternated rapidly, punctuated by powerful gusts of wind. Gambling with the weather, prepared teams withdrew abruptly, only to unexpectedly reappear at the start shortly thereafter. The Schluckspecht pulled out ahead of the pack with a fuel consumption of 3,198 km/l in the second timed run. The Schluckspecht achieved 2,795 km/l even while the track was wet; both drivers broke the 3,000 km/l barrier in subsequent runs. The previous year’s winner from Nantes, France came in second at 2,830 km/l.
Around 200 European teams took part in the Shell Eco-Marathon to determine which of their prototype vehicles are the best. The objective is to travel as far as possible with a given amount of energy. The vehicles drove seven rounds and their fuel economy was calculated in terms of km per litre of petrol.
