Esslingen student team succeeds at the Microsoft Imagine Cup 08

“Power in Time” is the name of the project by a team from the Esslingen University of Applied Sciences that took first prize at the Microsoft Imagine Cup 08. The theme of the Imagine Cup 2008, which was awarded at the Student Technology Conference in Berlin, was “Imagine a world where technology enables a sustainable environment”. The information technology students developed a solution to reduce power consumption of electronic devices in standby mode and presented it as a working prototype. The PoinT (
Power
in Time) couples all electronic devices and automatically switches off the mains connection when it is no longer being used. The devices remain available to users, even though the actual standby power consumption is reduced to 0 watts at the device. If the PoinT were to go into production, it would have the potential to reduce power consumption in households by at least ten percent.
The Esslingen-based IT students Daniel Franke, Vasilios Filippidis, Jörn Schindler and Axel Ernst are now preparing for their next competition, the international finale of the Imagine Cup in Paris from the 3rd to the 8th of July.
