The first European Science & Society Summer School will be taking place from the 25th to the 30th of August 2008. Its focus will be on interdisciplinary activities to counter the trend to excessive specialisation in the sciences. Practitioners of the life sciences, humanities and social sciences will be coming together for a week of intense communication to share experiences from their respective fields.
The Summer School was founded by Dr. Halldor Stefansson, Science & Society Programme Manager at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg, Germany, in co-operation with the European School of Molecular Medicine in Milan, Italy (IFOM-IEO Campus) and the Harvard Kennedy School in Cambridge, MA, USA.
Deconstructing and Ordering Living Organisms will be the theme of discussions exploring the impact of modern biology and genetics on the conventional understanding of human nature. The second part will focus on artificial life and bioentities. Numerous internationally renowned scientists will be participating as tutors.
Interested PhD students and postdocs have until the 30th of May to apply. Participation and travel costs will be borne by the European Union (Marie Curie Conference and Training Courses). The Summer School will be held at the International Wissenschaftsforum of the University of Heidelberg.
