A study involving over 100 test subjects demonstrated that certain aspects of mental performance benefit directly from physical activity. 77 runners completed the training plan devised at the Institute of Sports and Sports Science, Universität Karlsruhe (TH), as a part of a bachelor’s thesis. The study itself was carried out at the Ulm University Clinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy. Physically active participants were faster and more effective in processing a number of mental stimuli – a six-week programme of intensive running resulted in significant improvements in visual and spatial memory, concentration and mood.

The EEG studies showed a close correlation between physical fitness and electrical activity of the brain. But while aerobic training can increase the brain’s potential, the bad news for anyone not inclined to study is that running alone is not enough.
