FRIAS – the new Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies
The FRIAS is the new international research institute of the University of Freiburg. It is designed to give scientists from a wide range of disciplines a space within the university that will foster their creativity and scientific development. Researchers from all over the world are invited to pursue their own research projects as FRIAS fellows together with scientists from Freiburg.
The institute is organised in four sections: the School of History, the School of Language and Literature, the School of Life Sciences – LIFENET and the School of Soft Matter Research. The FRIAS fellows will present the results of their work in regular discussions and a dedicated series of publications. Young scientists have their own fora such as workshops with international leaders in their respective fields, interdisciplinary conferences for newcomers and FRIAS summer schools.
With the FRIAS, the University of Freiburg intends to strengthen its international competitive position and help shape worldwide discourse in central research fields. New impulses are also expected for the university’s academic operations. The FRIAS was set up in October 2007. Its operations commenced on the 1st of April and the opening ceremony held on the 5th of May 2008. The opening lecture was presented by Prof. Peter Goddard, Director of the Institute for Advanced Studies in Princeton.
