Summer school for oceanic and atmospheric researchers
From 13 to 20 July 2008, the Universität Konstanz will be holding a summer school titled “Observing and Understanding Earth: Making the Most of Environmental Measurements”. The workshop will be geared towards participants from a variety of disciplines – especially oceanic and atmospheric researchers, but also postdocs from fields such as biogeosciences and climate research.

Humanity is being confronted with the mounting challenges of environmental problems – above all global climate change. Solving them calls for a precise understanding of the complex interaction of physical and chemical processes, organisms and climate in different ecosystems. That understanding is based above all on observation and measurements. It starts with the chemical composition of individual rocks and local pressure and temperature measurements. Satellite images also provide important information. At the summer school, scientists will be addressing issues related to a variety of Earth observation instruments and platforms, data quality and the question of how measurement becomes science, or how the collected data can contribute to our understanding of the Earth and its climate.

Postdoctoral researchers from all over the world are cordially invited to apply for the summer school. The application deadline is 9 May.
