The current ranking of business and technology subject groups studied the degree to which educational institutions systematically augmented the technical content of their curricula with elements related to professional skills. These include developing social and methodical competence and promoting an international outlook and practical orientation. Ranking such factors gives both schools and businesses the information necessary for a well-rounded evaluation of the programmes.

Courses could score up to five stars in the comparison. Hochschule Ulm University of Applied Sciences was especially successful with four programmes that received top marks, followed by Reutlingen University and Albstadt-Sigmaringen University with three programmes each. In the business subject group, three of the eight top universities are in Baden-Württemberg: Furtwangen, Reutlingen and Heilbronn. In the technology subject group, the Southwest is home to six of the nine top-ranking universities: Ulm, Sigmaringen, Karlsruhe, Konstanz, Pforzheim and Reutlingen.

“The results of the study show that our universities of applied sciences are excellent – not only in developing technical competence, but also in their practical orientation. Baden-Württemberg’s universities offer their students outstanding perspectives on the employment market,” explained Baden-Württemberg’s Minister of Science, Research and the Arts, Professor Peter Frankenberg.

The employability ranking examined nearly 550 bachelor programmes offered by a variety of institutions of higher learning. The current ranking was also the first to include universities of co-operative education. The evaluation was performed by the dapm – an interest group of HR marketing executives from 43 major companies in Germany – and the Centre for Higher Education (CHE).
