For the first time, the meeting will be organised in co-operation with the partner universities Biocenter Oulu in Finland and Tongji Medical College, Wuhan, China. The topics of the meeting are developmental biology and degeneration of the heart and brain as a result of cancer or cardiovascular diseases.

Molecular medicine focuses on the study of diseases that originate at the molecular level. It covers a range of fields such as signal detection, signal networks, neuronal networks, endocrine systems and molecular oncology. The International Graduate School in Molecular Medicine Ulm was established by the University of Ulm on an interdisciplinary basis, complementing existing structures and the focal point of the university’s work in molecular medicine.
The "International PhD Programme in Molecular Medicine" PhD programme was launched in October 2005 at the Medical Faculty of Ulm University. It offers an attractive three-year course with the opportunity to obtain an international Doctor of Philosophy, PhD degree. Major aims of the programme are to improve the training of graduate students in an active and innovative scientific environment, improve the structure and focus of the graduate's education, encourage the graduates to perform independent scientific research and improve their career opportunities in research institutes or biotech companies.

The International Graduate School has been supported by the Excellence Initiative of the German federal and state governments since October 2007. An item on the agenda of the spring meeting has been reserved for the talented young researchers to present their research findings.
