German-Thai partnership offers joint master’s programme
The “Research for Sustainable Land Use and Rural Development in Mountainous Regions of Southeast Asia” collaborative research programme of the University of Hohenheim and Chiang Mai University has been a great success for the past eight years. The programme focuses on the socio-ecological conflict in Thailand’s mountainous regions and deals with issues that are representative for many other crisis regions.
Strong population growth and immigration is leading to poverty, ethnic conflicts and the exploitation of ecologically threatened mountainous regions in Thailand and Vietnam – a global problem found in many countries. The collaborative research programme is seeking comprehensive solutions for this complex conflict in co-operation with national universities in Thailand and Vietnam.
On 1 April 2008, the rectors of Chiang Mai University and the University of Hohenheim will sign an agreement establishing the Sustainable Agriculture and Integrated Watershed Management joint master’s programme. The course of study will consist of two basic semesters in Thailand, an interdisciplinary project semester in Hohenheim and a semester for the dissertation. A co-ordinator at each university will assist the students and provide support in finding a place to stay, enrolling in language courses and the like.
Graduates will receive a degree from both universities. The programme is set to commence in March 2009 and is open to holders of bachelor’s or comparable degrees in agriculture or related fields. Applicants must have a good command of English. Both universities are accepting applications and participants will be selected by a joint commission.
