University Award 2008 Goes to Mannheim Student

Volker Wunsch is the recipient of this year’s University Award, which is presented every year at Embedded World. The award thus went to a student at a university of applied sciences for the first time. Wunsch wrote his thesis, “6D Sensor Platform for Inertia- and GPS-aided Navigation”, under the supervision of academic advisor Prof. Marcus Vetter for the Institute for Embedded Systems at the Information Technology Department of the Mannheim University of Applied Sciences. Satellite-aided navigation systems are only reliable as long as the reception of the GPS satellite signal is assured. Their functionality is impaired in buildings or tunnels. Wunsch’s research project involved a hardware setup that supports a combination of satellite-aided and satellite-independent navigation to overcome those shortcomings.
Embedded World, the world’s leading conference and trade fair for embedded systems, presents its annual University Award to outstanding theses in the field of embedded technologies. The award pays tribute to especially innovative diploma, master or bachelor theses that are unique and future-orientated.
