The Role of Religion in Environmental Governance

Religions are arguably the single most powerful influence on individual and societal norms, values and belief systems. The role of religion in the context of environmental governance, however, is yet to be explored – from its influence on individual actors to shaping cultural frameworks. For example, some of the oldest protected natural areas are sacred sites. Religions can change individual behaviour and religious stakeholders can play a crucial role in collective actions. In collaborative policy making processes religious affiliation can be an obstacle or a catalyst for achieving agreements.

Organized by students of the M.Sc. course Environmental Governance at the University of Freiburg, the Forum will explore the conference topic with renowned international experts from various academic disciplines and practitioners from environmental, religious and political organizations. It aims to initiate a resilient dialogue across boundaries, disciplines and sectors, encouraging outside the box thinking.

The Forum is open to junior and senior staff from NGOs, administrations and private enterprises but also to interested students and individuals from the wider public. For further information and registration please write to meg_forum@ifp.uni-freiburg.de
