Three doctoral candidates in the aerospace field were presented the Amelia Earhart Fellowship Award by the ZONTA CLUB in Stuttgart, Germany, in early February. Diane Lauffer received the prize for her research work related to gas turbines and the cooling requirements of their combustion chamber components. Sabine Klinkner was recognized for her contribution to the development of a precision drive for an extraterrestrial rover vehicle. Birgit Lenz received the award for her work on an innovative scramjet engine that uses atmospheric oxygen, thus requiring less propellant weight in relation to conventional rocket engines.
The prize of 10,000 dollars is intended to recognize the work of women in male-dominated fields. Every year, 35 female scientists in the aerospace sector and related fields are tapped for the award, which commemorates aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart, the first woman to cross the Atlantic on a solo flight in 1932.
