Centre for Renewable Energy Opened
The University of Freiburg opened its Centre for Renewable Energy (ZEE) in late January 2008. Seven of the university’s eleven faculties are involved and a number of renowned external institutions are partnering with the centre as well. Partners such as the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems, which are all directly or indirectly involved in the fields of energy efficiency and renewable energy, will be tightly integrated in the centre’s projects.

The 2008/2009 winter semester will see the start of an internationally oriented, English-language Renewable Energy Management master’s programme in cooperation with the Faculty of Forest and Environmental Sciences. The programme will focus on long-term, sustainable sources of energy. With its practical, solution-oriented approach, the programme will focus on the task of developing ecologically sound, sustainable energy supply concepts. It will be open to graduates of engineering and environmental sciences programmes who will be able to choose from four special directions: solar energy, biomass, geothermal energy and energy efficiency.

One day after the opening of the ZEE, a photovoltaic project underscored Freiburg’s dedication to the use of renewable energy sources: it set up a digital solar panel to provide information about the amount of electricity generated by the largest solar roof project on public buildings in Baden-Württemberg.
